How to Write a Rent Agreement in Pakistan — Step by Step
Published: March 2026 · 6 min read
A rent agreement is a legal contract between a landlord and tenant. A proper agreement protects both parties and prevents disputes. Here is how to write one correctly in Pakistan.
Step 1 — Use Stamp Paper
The agreement must be written on stamp paper of appropriate value. In Sindh, a Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000 stamp paper is typically used for residential rent agreements.
Step 2 — Include These Essential Details
- Full names and CNIC numbers of both landlord and tenant
- Complete property address with property description
- Monthly rent amount in both numbers and words
- Security/advance deposit amount and conditions for refund
- Lease start and end date (usually 11 months for residential)
- Utility bills responsibility — who pays electricity, gas, water
- Notice period — how much notice is required to vacate (usually 1 month)
Step 3 — Signatures and Witnesses
Both landlord and tenant must sign and thumb-print the agreement. Additionally, two witnesses must sign with their full names and CNICs.
Step 4 — Keep Copies
Make at least two original copies on stamp paper — one for the landlord and one for the tenant.
Step 5 — Optional: Notarisation
For extra legal protection, you can get the agreement attested by a notary public. Recommended for high-value properties or long-term leases.
- Not specifying the annual rent increase percentage
- Forgetting to document the property condition at move-in
- Not specifying what happens to the deposit if tenant leaves early
